It’s time to raise a glass to translators across the world! Since 1953, when the International Federation of Translators decided to declare 30 September International Translation Day, the translation community has come together to celebrate.
Every year there is a theme for International Translation Day and this year’s theme is ‘connecting worlds.’ Translators help break down language barriers and open up the world to everyone and I couldn’t think of a better theme for the day.
Over the course of a year, a translator will typically translate between 300,000 to 1,000,000 words – definitely a reason to enjoy today, you deserve it!
Giving back on International Translation Day
As I mentioned, the theme for International Translation Day 2016 is ‘connecting worlds’ and nobody does this better in a time of humanitarian crisis than ‘Translators without Borders.’
For those of you who are unfamiliar with Translators without Borders, it is a non-profit organization ‘that aims to close the language gaps that hinder critical humanitarian efforts worldwide.’ They have done fantastic work over the years including the Ebola crisis in West Africa and in the aftermath of the 2015 Nepal earthquake.
“On International Translation Day Translators without Borders recognises the important role that translators play in connecting people everywhere to vital information. The translation profession contributes to empowering communities worldwide by giving them access to knowledge in a language they can understand.”
Aimee Ansari, Executive Director of Translators without Borders
This International Translation Day, we want to give back to the industry and the amazing work Translators without Borders is doing every single day. That’s why for every visit to our dedicated Translators without Borders webpage on International Translation Day, we will donate €1.*
