The Laguna Colorada - Bolivia

Location of the Week: The Laguna Colorada, Bolivia

Laguna Colorada, or the Red Lagoon, is a salt lake in the southwest of the Altiplano of Bolivia, close to the country’s border with Chile.
Located at an altitude of 14,000 feet, it contains white islands of borax deposits (soft crystals); while it’s red color is attributed to the variety of red sediments and algae thriving in the salt water.

The air temperature is below freezing, however the site is stunning, set amongst volcanic rocks and often blue skies. The lake is also home to a large variety of birds and animals like flamingos, pumas and foxes.
